University of South Carolina basketball commit Tessa Johnson broke a St. Michael-Albertville high school record last Friday by scoring 51 points in a win over Chaska.

KSTP recently spoke with STMA Knights head coach Kent Hamre, as well as Johnson about the record, last year’s devastating state-title loss, thoughts on this year’s team, and why she chose the University of South Carolina.

Johnson is among a star-studded Minnesota 2023 high school class. Gophers commit and Maple Grove guard Kennedy Klick and Hopkins forward and Michigan commit Taylor Woodson are also in that mix. As is Chaska’s Kennedy Sanders, a Colorado commit. Another Hopkins Royal, Sunaja Agara, is a Stanford commit and ranked by national services neck-and-neck with Johnson as the best 2023 player in the state.
