Gophers men’s, women’s basketball schedules announced

The 2021-22 season schedules for the University of Minnesota men’s and women’s basketball programs were announced on Wednesday.

The upcoming season will be the fourth for the women’s program under head coach Lindsay Whalen.

The 29-game schedule for the women’s team includes 16 games at Williams Arena and tips off on Oct. 31 with an exhibition game against Minnesota Crookston. The regular season will get underway on Nov. 9 with a home game against Jacksonville.

Minnesota’s first road game will be Nov. 12 against Arizona State. The Gophers are also one of eight teams that will compete in the inaugural Women’s Battle 4 Atlantis from Nov. 20 through Nov. 22, which will include a matchup with UConn.

Another new twist to Minnesota’s schedule is Big Ten play before all non-conference contests are wrapped up. That last happened for the Gophers in the 2009-10 season.

The men’s program is getting ready for its first season under new head coach Ben Johnson.

After an exhibition game against Concordia-St. Paul on Nov. 1, Johnson’s head coaching career will officially begin on Nov. 9 when Kansas City comes to Williams Arena. The men’s basketball schedule includes 17 home games.

The Gophers will also participate in the Asheville Championship on Nov. 12 and Nov. 14, and the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 30 before conference play begins on Dec. 8 with a home game against Michigan State.
