The University of Minnesota announced Tuesday seven of 170 COVID-19 tests given to student-athletes during the month of June came back positive.
Seven positive results from 170 tests is a positive test rate of 4.1%.
The positive results came from multiple sports. Student-athletes from football, men's hockey, men's basketball, women's basketball, women's soccer and women's volleyball returned to campus in the last several weeks.
Student-athletes testing positive enter a protocol that includes self-isolation. They will be monitored through regular, daily communication with the athletic training staff and additional testing and screening. They must be cleared by a team physician before returning to athletic activity.
The athletic department's emailed release says contact tracing will identify other individuals who were potentially exposed. They will be asked to quarantine to help prevent the spread of the virus.
