Maple Grove boys hockey upsets Blaine to advance to state

The Maple Grove Crimson boys hockey defeated the Blaine Bengals 3-0 Thursday evening at Aldrich Arena to win Section 5AA and advance to the state tournament.

Maple Grove scored first in the first period when junior defenseman Henry Nelson put one in the back of the net with just under four minute remaning in the period.

In the second, sophomore forward Joshua Giulani scored off a beautiful assist to put Maple Grove up 2-0.

The game was effectively over after Crimson junior forward Chris Kernan scored on a breakaway to make it a 3-0 game with just over seven minutes left in the game.

Junior goalie Jack Wieneke was a brick wall for Maple Grove and was able to complete the shutout and send the Crimson to the state tournament.
