Hill-Murray boys hockey edges outs Mahtomedi in the battle of defending state champions

The Hill-Murray Pioneers boys hockey team defeated the Mahtomedi Zephyrs 2-1, Saturday night at the St. Croix Rec Center.

The Pioneers struck first in the first period when senior forward Nick Mountain scored on a breakaway for Hill-Murray to make it 1-0 with 11:58 left in the first period.

The score would remain tied until the second period when Mahtomedi’s senior forward Adam Johnson scored for the Zephyrs to make it 1-1 with 11:08 left in the second period.

With the game still 1-1 in the third period, Hill-Murray’s senior forward Triston Tabucol scored on a rebound to put the Pioneers up 2-1 with only 5:44 left in the game. Hill-Murray’s junior goaltender held strong the last five-plus minutes to give the Pioneers the victory over Mahtomedi.
