4-star Class of 2021 defensive back Steven Ortiz Jr. talks to our Darren 'Doogie' Wolfson about committing to the Gophers. He's currently a junior at Desert Edge High School in Arizona.

Ortiz, who is 6-feet and 175-pounds, picked the Gophers over other offers from Oregon, Washington, Penn State, Mississippi State, Washington State, Arizona, and more Power-5 programs.

While recruiting Ortiz, the Gophers compared him to defensive back Antoine Winfield Jr., who's expected to be a top-40 pick in next week's NFL Draft.

Ortiz is currently rated the No. 17 corner in the country on 247Sports rankings, a top recruiting website. That's the highest defensive back ranking the Gophers have received a commitment from in 247's history.

Ortiz said that Gophers coach P.J. Fleck is like a father figure, and that Fleck checks in on him daily. Ortiz committed to the Gophers without officially visiting. He did take a virtual visit.

The Gophers are coming off of an 11-win season that included a win on New Year's Day over Auburn in the Outback Bowl.
