An elementary school in Monticello has closed for the day Tuesday due to an ongoing situation near the school.

In a social media post, the Wright County Sheriff's Office asked people to avoid the area of Fenning Avenue and School Boulevard "due to an active police incident in the area."

The sheriff's office stated Eastview Elementary School has closed for the day due to the incident.

According to an update later Tuesday morning, the sheriff's office reported deputies learned a man being sought for felony domestic assault had returned to a residence in the area, reportedly with a firearm.

A pursuit took place after the suspect refused to comply with a traffic stop upon leaving the residence. The pursuit ended near the school, which was locked down.

The sheriff's office reported the man is refusing to cooperate.

Due to the ongoing nature of the incident, the sheriff's office has asked the public to avoid the area.
