The number of handgun carry permits issued in Minnesota spiked last year, with nearly 100,000 issued in total in 2020, according to data released by the Department of Public Safety Monday.
DPS reports a total of 96,554 people were issued such permits. That's 45,150 more permits than were issued in 2019, or an 87% increase year-over-year.
The top five counties where permits were issued by sheriffs include Hennepin, Dakota, Anoka, Ramsey and Washington counties.
According to sheriff's offices in the state, 103 permits were suspended, 36 were revoked, 968 were voided and 1,191 were denied in 2020.
Sheriff's offices also reported individuals with permits to carry committed 3,110 crimes during 2020. Two percent of those incidents included crimes where a firearm was used. More than 51% of the crimes committed were DWIs or traffic offenses.
