Bishop of New Ulm diocese resigns

The Diocese of New Ulm announced Thursday that Bishop John LeVoir has resigned as bishop of the diocese.

The 74-year-old has served as the bishop for the diocese since 2008.

According to the diocese, LeVoir has been undergoing "physical and psychological assessment" at Sacred Heart Mercy Health Care System in Michigan. He is expected to remain at the center until September.

"Although these last years have been very challenging for the diocese and the life of the Church, it has been a privilege to have served the faithful of the Diocese of New Ulm," LeVoir said.

There has been no timeline for the appointment of a new bishop, according to the diocese. However, the replacement process, which will be run by the Vatican, is expected to begin immediately.
