Anoka-Hennepin Schools is the latest metro district to modify its upcoming winter break schedule, citing staffing shortages and mental health needs in the district.

The district said Thursday that two school days will be impacted: Wednesday, Dec 22, and Monday, Jan. 3. There will be no school for students either day. On Dec. 22 the district will be closed. Jan 3 will be used as a staff planning day.

The plan was supported by the school board following reviewing staffing trends over the last few years and especially scrutinizing the past two months.

There are still 200 unfilled positions in the district, which the schools say are impacting all areas. The district says the additional staff planning day is meant to help all employees catch up on essential work to support their students.

All high school athletics and activities will still be happening as originally planned on Dec. 22 and Jan. 3 unless students are alerted. Adventures Plus child care will be available for enrolled families on January 3.

The school system is also looking at other school calendar modifications during the upcoming spring semester, but no plans have been finalized yet.
