State Patrol: Driver of semi-truck in fatal Blaine crash ran red light

UPDATE: Authorities say the driver of a semi-truck that hit an SUV – killing its driver – ran a red light.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the truck was southbound on Highway 65 in Blaine Monday morning and hit an eastbound SUV at an intersection. An incident report states the SUV came to a rest in the northbound lanes of Highway 65.

The woman, identified by the State Patrol as a 51-year-old from Coon Rapids, died at the scene.

The semi-truck driver, identified as a 37-year-old East Bethel man, was treated at Mercy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The incident report states road conditions were wet at the time of the crash.

The crash report did not say if the woman was wearing a seatbelt, but stated the semi-truck driver was wearing his seatbelt.

Police said more information on the deceased will be released Tuesday.

The crash caused a stretch of Highway 65 to be closed in both directions for about four-and-a-half hours Monday morning between 105th Avenue NE and Cloud Drive Northeast. The crash happened just before 4:30 a.m.

9:06 a.m.: Nearly five hours after a fatal crash closed a section of Highway 65 in Blaine, police have confirmed that the route is open to normal traffic.

The stretch that was closed down was in both directions between 105th Avenue Northeast and Cloud Drive Northeast in Blaine, the Minnesota State Patrol said Monday morning.

6:54 a.m.: Authorities say one person is dead and another person is injured following an early morning crash in Blaine Monday.

According to the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, multiple agencies were called to the area of 109th avenues NE just before 4:30 a.m. for a report of a crash involving a semi-truck and another vehicle.

The Sheriff’s Office says the semi-truck, which was headed south on Central Avenue, hit a SUV traveling east on 109th Avenue.

Authorities say a woman driving the SUV was killed at the scene, and the man driving the truck received minor injuries.

There was no immediate word on what caused the crash to happen.

The crash is being investigated by members of the Sheriff’s Office, the State Patrol, the Blaine Police Department and the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Cameras in the area could see traffic backing up, as the crash caused a stretch of Highway 65/Central Avenue to be closed in both directions between 105th Avenue NE and Cloud Drive NE.

Commuters who usually drive this route are told to University Avenue, Radisson Road, Highway 10 or westbound Interstate 35 for the time being.
