Millions of Americans are expected to travel this weekend for the Labor Day holiday, either by road or by air.

Some travel experts are expecting this Labor Day weekend to be the busiest since 2019.

If you haven’t hit the road already, you may want to do so before 1 p.m., when things are likely to really pick up.

“It’s pretty much like a parking lot. It’s pretty bad, especially with construction and stuff,” said traveler Austin Lewis.

Most people are expected to be traveling in their vehicles, according to the Regional AAA, which says road trips account for about 95% of travel.

However, many people will still be hitting the skies.

According to Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, about 32,000 Minnesotans are expected to take off Thursday and Friday.

“People want to travel and they have the ability to and Minneapolis airport is a good place to come in and out of traveling,” said Laurie Benson, another traveler.

AAA says the top destinations for fliers include Orlando, Anchorage, Las Vegas, Chicago and New York City.

Many people will be heading north in Minnesota, and declining gas prices are helping with that.

AAA also says travel volumes are nearly back to normal.

“Assuming that Labor Day weekend follows the trend that we’ve seen over the summer and the rest of the holidays this year, we can assume we will be close to those pre-pandemic numbers but not quite at them yet,” Meredith Mitts of Auto Group Club AAA Minnesota-Iowa said.

Traffic is expected to be heavy on both Friday and Monday.
