Tax filing season starts Monday

Tax filing season across the country begins Monday, and residents have until April 18 to finish the job.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue recommends filing electronically and getting refunds through direct deposit.

Anyone who has already filed will have their taxes submitted Monday when the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and state systems open.

After filing, Minnesota residents can also track the status of their refund online.

As previously reported, the IRS has added 5,000 new customer service representatives who were trained in taxpayer rights and technical account management issues.

This year, the IRS announced April 18 as the deadline due to the normal filing date falling on a weekend, and the District of Columbia’s Emancipation Day holiday falling on April 17. If you request an extension, you have until Oct. 16 to file.
