Lakeville, Moorhead offices to offer same-day driver’s licenses via new pilot program

Starting Monday, Minnesotans who visit two locations participating in a new pilot program will be able to receive their driver’s licenses on the same day as their visit, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The DPS reports same-day cards are available to Minnesotans who are applying for, renewing, or replacing a standard Class D driver’s license, permit or identification card at either the Dakota County License center in Lakeville or the Clay County Department of Motor Vehicles office in Moorhead.

The DPS reports the following options do not have same-day availability: REAL ID compliant driver’s licenses, permits or IDs; enhanced driver’s licenses, permits or IDs; and commercial driver’s licenses or permits.

The pilot program runs through June 30, 2023. There is no additional fee for a same-day card, the DPS states.

More information about the differences between the same-day issued cards and traditionally-issued cards can be found here.

As a reminder, starting May 3, 2023, Minnesotans will no longer be able to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities only using a standard driver’s license or ID. Learn more about the REAL ID process here.
