Rochester officer accused of tipping off dealers

A Rochester Police officer is under investigation after officials say she was involved in criminal activity, including providing sensitive information to an indicted suspect.

According to the criminal complaint, Officer Vanessa Nicole Mason allegedly shared information about people in the Rochester Narcotics Unit to several men being investigating for drug crimes.

The complaint also alleges Mason was seen using drugs and hanging out with known drug offenders.

According to police, Mason was disciplined in 2006 for violating the department's rule and procedures by failing to report drug use by a fellow officer. At that time, Mason was warned if there were any more disciplinary issues, she would likely be terminated, according to the department.

Mason, 31, faces charges of public officer misconduct and bribery. If convicted of all counts, she faces up to 27 years in prison, a $56,000 fine, or both.

She has been put on administrative leave pending the investigation.
