The theme all winter long has been the lack of snow, and thus the unusual warmth. Even though it was still chilly today, it was above average. Sunshine and bare ground adds up to temperatures that are usually above average. Since the center of the Arctic air that was over us on Friday and Saturday has moved on, we can start on the road to recovery. Temperatures most of this week will end up above average with highs in the low to mid 30s just about every day. Clouds are expected to move in early Monday, with even a little light snow over southern Minnesota by Monday afternoon. It doesn’t look like much anywhere, but there could be a little coating especially in the far south. There’s a slightly better chance for periods of snow late Wednesday and Thursday. This system is worth watching, because as we get deeper into the month, more and more moisture will become available due to the gradual change in the jet stream.
The Outlook
We should warm a little more as we go into the weekend, with highs by Sunday in the mid to possibly upper 30s. Another ripple in the flow aloft should create an increasing chance for snow late Sunday night and Monday of next week. This is another one of those storms that should get a little more of our attention. The strength of the upper level system is expected to be a little more impressive, with the addition of more cold air to work with. Let’s hope we at least get some moisture, no matter what form it comes in.
