Understanding ID Theft and Fraud
Identity theft occurs when someone illegally obtains your personal information, such as your Social Security number, and uses it to open accounts or initiate transactions in your name. This can cause financial loss and damage to your credit.
What might surprise you is that identity theft crimes are often committed by people you know or have contact with; anyone with access to your checkbook, credit cards or statements.
Online fraud and e-mail crime, also known as “phishing, is on the rise. While it is a real threat, you can protect yourself by learning what to look out for.
M&I Security Reminder: For security reasons, M&I will never request your confidential or account access information via e-mail.
If you suspect that someone has gained access to important personal information such as your Social Security number or M&I account numbers, immediately use the reporting checklist below to reduce your risk of identity fraud.
With M&I’s Free Identity Theft Assistance, we’re available 24-hours a day at 1-888-464-5463 to answer your questions and help you through the steps you should take to protect your accounts.
